BUSH 43, REAGAN CLOSED OUR SOUTHERN BORDER
The President of the United States has complete authority to close America’s borders for any reason and for so long has he deems necessary. Presidents Reagan and Bush 43 closed the borders during their tenure. Democrats did not scream “racism!!!”
In mid-October, when the Central American caravan was weeks away from arriving at the US-Mexican border, the president tweeted: “I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught – and if unable to do so I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!.”
Two thousand in the Central American caravan then arrived and overwhelmed public & private resources in Tijuana, Mexico. Knowing there are at least 5,000 coming behind them, President Trump repeated & repeated that it might be necessary to close our 2,000-mile border with Mexico.
TWO OBAMA OFFICIALS:
PRESIDENT HAS POWER TO CLOSE BORDER
“You can certainly stop entries coming across the border, whether its truck traffic or cars or pedestrians,” said Gil Kerlikowske, Obama’s commissioner of U.S. Customs & Border Protection. “Logistically, that’s possible. The gates are closed, and you say, ‘Right now we’re not taking entry.'”
President George W. Bush partially closed the southern border following the 9-11 terrorist attacks, requiring full inspections of all incoming pedestrians & vehicles. President Ronald Reagan temporarily closed ports of entry along the southern border in 1985 following the kidnapping & murder of a DEA agent in Mexico.
“(Reagan) wanted answers from Mexico and wasn’t getting them, so he shut the border down,” Thomas Homan, Trump’s former head of Immigration & Customs Enforcement, said. “It wasn’t long before Mexico, unfortunately, found him, he’d been tortured and murdered, but they also arrested the people who committed that crime. It worked.”
“He has to work with Congress, and there’s some bureaucratic, legal procedures he has to work through, but he can,” said Frank Mora, a former deputy assistant secretary in Obama’s Department of Defense.
IS TRUMP BLUFFING SO MEXICO WILL COOPERATE?
Is Trump using this threat simply to get America’s southern neighbors to cooperate? It worked for President Reagan.
The Trump Administration has already pushed legal limits to protect American sovereignty & safety: 1) implementing a temporary travel ban, 2) punishing sanctuary cities and 3) ending programs that protected a 1 MIL plus illegal immigrants from deportation. Some military experts feel that Trump will find a way to deploy active-duty military to the border in the name of national security.
CLOSING THE BORDER HAS ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES
Trump must also consider economic consequences, not only in the four border states (CA, AZ, NM, TX) but throughout the country.
The U.S. State Department estimates that $1.7 billion in goods and services, and hundreds of thousands of people, legally cross the border each day. The U.S. gets 44 percent of its fresh fruits and vegetables from Mexico, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
“There’s a reason ports of entry exist,” said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies. They are needed to safeguard Americans and American interests.
“This really does exemplify how Trump articulates what a lot of ordinary people feel when they see when a caravan of illegal migrants heads toward the U.S.,” Krikorian said. “That’s part of his strength. He gives voices to the reaction that normal* people have to news events.”

*Awh, there is the word “normal” again. Americans have been using that term a lot during the Era of Trump. With his support Normal Americans are finally standing up for themselves.
