ANTI-GUN & PRO-POT LOBBIES, BIG DONORS
WON BY A HAIR IN FLORIDA MIDTERMS
GOP State Representative, Matt Caldwell, a strong Second Amendment supporter, went to bed on election night with a healthy vote margin of 41,000. He won the office of Florida’s Agriculture Commissioner. This commissioner has control over issuing & terminating all Concealed Carry Permits, and interpreting how to comply with Florida Statutes.
When Caldwell woke up, he was behind the Democrat candidate, Nikki Fried, by 5,000 votes. He believes the same “newly found” 77,000 ballots in Broward County that decreased Scott’s & DeSantis’ leads, wiped out his lead and advanced Fried. Fried campaigned strongly against Floridians’ right to self-defense, praying on public fears following the February Parkland school shooting.
DID BRENDA ’S BALLOT MANIPULATION HELP NIKKI?
As thousands of late ballots were tallied, particularly in Broward (Fried’s hometown) and Palm Beach counties, the race for Agriculture Commissioner flipped. After machine & manual recounts, Fried emerged victorious by 6,753 votes, less than one percent difference.
The Ag Commissioner was the only statewide race that resulted in a win for Democrats. Fried discovered that her first run for public office made her the highest-ranking Democrat in the state. She will also be the first woman elected to this office. Republicans, however, won 13 of the 14 Cabinet races, most by large margins.
According to Fried “Democracy doesn’t happen overnight.”
WEAPONS, WEED, WATER
Fried says her campaign’s success centered around her “three W’s:” Weapons, Weed, Water.
Her campaign was heavily predicated on gun control and expanded access to medical marijuana “These were things that transcend Democrats, independents and Republicans,” Fried said of her campaign platform. “I made them believe that I want to fix things and make things better.”
Fried’s smartest move was emphasizing gun control in the wake of this year’s mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The shooter turned out to be a mentally ill, violent teen. Despite the fact that both school authorities and the Sheriff’s office long knew that the shooter was dangerous, they chose to do nothing to protect the public and other students. But, Fried blamed the gun he used.
Fried spent time publicly distancing herself from the National Rifle Association, gaining attention from parents of Parkland victims. Caldwell, on the other hand, was endorsed by the NRA and campaigned on a promise to defend the Second Amendment at all costs.
OUT-OF-STATE MONEY & SUPPORT
MADE THE DIFFERENCE
Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety came through with huge donations.
Former Governor & current U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist (FL-D) said the state was desperate for “more leaders like Nikki.” Former Vice President Joe Biden endorsed her, as well.
Alex Sink, the last Democrat to hold a cabinet position, called the overall Democrat losses “demoralizing.” She said Nikki’s role in the cabinet is “very, very important” to offer balance among top state leaders.
The question for Floridians now becomes: Will Commissioner Fried “creatively interpret” Concealed Carry Statutes to put up roadblocks for citizens wanting to exercise their right to carry?
