Col. Leland Bohannon was recently punished because he stuck to his beliefs about gay marriage.
The incident took place last month. Col. Bohannon could not, due to religious beliefs, sign a retiring master sergeant’s partner’s certificate. Col. Bohannon offered a solution of having a higher ranking member sign the document, but it still upset the master sergeant.
Because of this, Col. Bohannon was suspended from command and most likely will not receive his promotion. This small incident ended this colonel’s career.
A group of prominent U.S. senators is coming to the defense of a highly-decorated Air Force colonel who could be booted out of the military over his religious views on same-sex marriage.
Col. Leland Bohannon, an experienced combat pilot, was suspended from command and orders were handed down recommending he not be promoted after he refused to publicly affirm the same-sex spouse of a retiring subordinate.
Last May the colonel declined to sign a certificate of spouse appreciation for a retiring master sergeant’s same-sex spouse. Instead, he asked a higher ranking military leader to sign the customary document.
However, the retiring service member took offense and subsequently filed a discrimination complaint. The EO investigator determined the colonel had indeed discriminated and went on to say that “even had the accommodation been granted, Col. Bohannon would nonetheless be guilty of unlawful discrimination.”
This is complete BULL! What happened to freedom of speech and religion? Col. Bohannon did nothing wrong at all! He did not discriminate against the master sergeant at all. He excused himself do to his beliefs, and he asked someone else to do it. If he was discriminating, he would have not had anyone sign it at all.
This is ridiculous! I’m sorry that the master sergeant was offended, but he was not being discriminated against. I actually applaud Col. Bohannon because he didn’t discriminate. He actually did the right thing by excusing himself. The punishment needs to be over turned!
