President Trump sent several tweets explaining that Puerto Rico’s infrastructure and financial crisis were already an issue before Hurricane Marie made landfall a couple of weeks ago. The President scorned the leaders of the territory for not also aiding the citizens. Trump has repeatedly called for more local aid as FEMA can’t be there forever.

President Trump has stated that the aid The US is giving to the territory is very expensive. The amount of aid has already begun to hit our budget. The House is expected to vote on a 40 billion disaster aid package to Puerto Rico. Congress is also set to vote on 5 billion dollars in direct loans to ease the territory’s financial crisis.

Fox News:

The president’s comments come just one week after he visited the U.S. territory that is struggling to recover from the devastation left by Hurricane Maria, the strongest hurricane to hit Puerto Rico in nearly a century.

Trump’s trip to Puerto Rico was criticized, for among other things commenting on how the storm’s death toll was far lower than that of a “real catastrophe like Katrina” in 2005.

“Sixteen people versus in the thousands,” Trump said. “You can be very proud of all your people.”

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, earlier this month, there were more than 10,000 federal officials on the ground on the island.

On Friday, House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., plans to lead a small bipartisan group, including the chairman and top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee that signs off on spending legislation, to visit Puerto Rico

I, for one, applaud Trump for this action. Hurricane Marie was truly a devastating storm on the island, but the territory needs to lend aid as well. We can deliver some aid, but we can’t be expected to rebuild the whole country.  The US cannot continue being the world’s bank. We simply can’t afford it anymore.

The US is trying to get its spending under control after 8 years of reckless spending by former President Obama. Puerto Rico has to be able to provide aid to its own people as well. The US is already dealing with the recent Vegas shooting, wild fires throughout Northern California, and the damage left behind hurricane Harvey, Maria, and Nate. Our resources are already spread out thin. President Trump is sending all the aid he can, but its useless when the territory won’t help at all.
